About HVM

HVM differs from traditional public schools in a variety of ways that are detailed thoroughly throughout this site and its charter.

The more broad and notable distinctions include:

  • First and foremost, HVM is based on the Montessori method of education which is centered on the tenets of grace, courtesy, respect and responsibility (About Montessori)

  • HVM is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees (Members of the Board)

  • HVM received its charter in February of 2003 to open for the 2004-2005 school-year. (Charter Final Application) HVM is monitored closely by the Massachusetts Department of Education and is accountable for successfully maintaining well-defined standards and goals.

  • HVM was founded by a volunteer group of local committed parents, professionals and educators who believe in…making a difference ~ one student at a time.

What is a Charter School?

A Commonwealth Charter School is a Massachusetts public school that operates independent of any school committee under a five-year charter granted by the Massachusetts Board of Education.

It is started by parents, teachers, non-profit organizations, or community leaders.

It has the freedom to organize around a core mission, curriculum, theme, or teaching method, and is allowed to control its own budgets, teachers and staff work in a non-union environment.

In return for this freedom, a charter school must attract students and produce results within five years or have its charter revoked.
