History
Many of these Founders’ Group members met through their children’s pre-school, the Merrimack Montessori School in Haverhill, and believe in the value of Montessori education. Concerned educators from within and outside the area joined these parents in sharing concerns that educational choices, especially in a city with great diversity, should be available to all children regardless of socioeconomic status. They further believe that the City’s schools must ensure and support high levels of student achievement.
This Founders’ group worked diligently to complete the State’s rigorous multi-phase charter application process. Based on the application they submitted, a charter was granted by the Massachusetts Board of Education on February 25, 2003. This charter allows the Hill View Montessori Charter School to open in Fall 2004 with grades one through three, eventually growing to provide education through eighth grade.
In June 2003 an official Board of Trustees was formed to be responsible for the control and supervision of the charter school. The initial Board consists of eight of the ten members of the Founders’ Group and is a strong team of parents, educators and community members who are committed to children and the city of Haverhill. The Board is now working to grow and diversify to best meet the challenges of this new school.
